A FOOD reviewer who visited Scotland’s ‘most expensive restaurant’ said it was a “once in a lifetime” experience.
YouTube’s Gary Eats sat down for a three-course meal at The Witchery in Edinburgh’s Castehill.
Gary has worked in the food business for 35 years, and travels up and down the UK to “find some of the best food available”.
In a recent review video, he booked a table at Scotland’s ‘most expensive restaurant’.
The Witchery by The Castle is hidden in a collection of historic buildings dating back to 1595, at the gates of Edinburgh Castle.
The venue has an award-winning wine list, and boasts “the most atmospheric dining rooms in all of Scotland”.
On first impressions when he walks in, Gary was very taken by the “beautiful” and “truly stunning” decor and atmosphere.
For starters, he had the Portobello haggis with pineapple chutney and potato bhaji – which costs £16.
And he praised the “incredible” dish to start off the meal.
Gary then opted for the lemon sole with avruga caviar and tartar sauce, which cost a total of £50.
He had additional potatoes and greens at £6.95 each.
“I’ve got to say the taste of that fish is incredible, it’s cooked absolutely perfect. Made in heaven.”
And for his final course, Gary had the dark chocolate torte with hazelnut cremeaux, costing £11.50, which he said was “a really good dessert”.
At the end of the video Gary spoke about his experience and added: “The restaurant itself, I have got to say it is stunning in there.
“In the area I was in there was about 14 tables, and there were four waiters looking after you, so the attention to detail was excellent. Super professional.
“It’s a restaurant steeped in history and it is absolutely beautiful inside.”
Gary then revealed how much he spent in the restaurant, with a 10 per cent service charge.
Looking over his receipt, Gary revealed he spent just over £110.
He added: “It’s all the money isn’t it?
“But it isn’t that. This is an experience, this is a once in a lifetime.
“Would I go back there? In a heartbeat.
“Could I afford to go back there? No, I couldnt.
“It’s all the money but it’s quality. And sometimes you’ve got to pay for that experience.
“I’m going to give it a nine out of 10.
