Sanjay Leela Bhansali and Rajkumar Hirani are one of the most celebrated filmmakers out there in Indian cinema. However, did you know that they had one assisted director-producer Vidhu Vinod Chopra during their beginner days. In a recent interaction, Chopra revealed that he had once lashed out at the two for cutting a trailer of his cult romantic drama, 1942: A Love Story which he found underwhelming.
When Vidhu Vinod Chopra Lashed Out At Sanjay Leela Bhansali And Rajkumar Hirani
While interacting with Kellog School Of Management this year, Vidhu Vinod Chopra recalled his first meeting with Rajkumar Hirani which was not quite pleasant for the latter. The 12th Fail director said that Sanjay Leela Bhansali who was his assistant during that time was asked to cut the trailer for 1942: A Love Story by him. Vidhu remembered finding the trailer cut ‘terrible’ and asked SLB to work on the trailer cut again and again. However, Chopra rejected all the cuts which were presented to him and asked Bhansali who was the person behind this.
Sanjay Leela Bhansali honestly replied that he knew he was not able to do it on his own so he had asked another person to cut the trailer for 1942: A Love Story. It was then that a skinny boy walked into the room. This immediately made Vidhu Vinod Chopra abuse the boy a lot. This boy was none other than Rajkumar Hirani. Recalling the incident, Chopra said, “I gave the boy some really bad Gaalis. That boy was Rajkumar Hirani.”
According to the Times Of India, Vidhu Vinod Chopra had once revealed to a publication how Sanjay Leela Bhansali was scared and meek initially while assisting him. Giving examples to the same, the director remembered the Padmaavat director getting nervous while going to receive an award for 1942: A Love Story on behalf of Chopra. However, he is proud of how accomplished both SLB and Rajkumar Hirani have become today. Vidhu’s last film 12th Fail was a big commercial and critical success. It starred Vikrant Massey in the lead role.
