THE VIDEO QUICKLY WENT VIRAL

It is believed it happened at the Black Marlin Restaurant in Millers Point, Simon’s Town, Cape Town.

Last year, a baboon troop made themselves at home in the Simon’s Town Naval base, regularly raiding the base’s kitchen and nearby homes and restaurants.

Attempts by baboon monitors armed with paintball guns to control the movement and activities of the baboons have failed, leaving residents divided on how to best manage the problem.

Meanwhile, earlier this year an adult male baboon from the Smitswinkel troop in the Simon’s Town area was euthanised after an investigation by SPCA veterinarians revealed serious injuries.

THE AREA IS KNOWN FOR BABOONS VENTURING INTO URBAN SPACES

X-rays revealed that besides the injuries from a reported fight with another male, baboon WF8 – better known as Van Damme – had up to 15 penetrating pellet gun wounds. Pellets had lodged in his abdomen, chest, arms and legs, with one large-calibre pellet lodged in his ear canal, according to the Cape of Good Hope SPCA.

The SPCA said the fight with the other baboon left him blinded in one eye, with additional injuries to his face, arms and chest. It stated that the severity of his wounds would have necessitated an extended and painful healing period, with repeated medical procedures

“It would not have been fair or kind to keep him medicated, isolated and separated from his troop for such a long recovery time,” it said.

EARLIER THIS YEAR A BABOON KNOWN AS VAN DAMME MADE HEADLINES

Simon’s Town, with its proximity to mountainous regions, often sees baboons venturing into urban spaces. These primates, known for their intelligence and adaptability, frequently seek food in residential and commercial areas, leading to such encounters.
