Huge blow for nature fans as top UK attraction forced to close at short notice – despite plans to stay open until August

AN IMMERSIVE attraction in the UK has been forced to close at short notice – despite plans to stay open until August.

BBC Earth Experience first opened to the public on March 30, 2023, intending to delight fans of Sir David Attenborough.

But the attraction, which centred around David Attenborough’s 2019 documentary series, Seven Worlds, One Planet, was forced to close on February 1, 2024 – less than one year after it opened.

The attraction, which audio and video footage from the show, was housed in the purpose-built Daikin Centre, with visits lasting around 50 minutes.

Despite being expected to stay open until at least August, the attraction closed earlier this month.

The Standard has cited criticism over ticket prices as the reason behind the early closure – although this remains unconfirmed.

A statement from the attraction, published in the Standard, said: “Moon Eye Productions have taken the decision not to extend the BBC Earth Experience London beyond February 1st 2024.

“Anyone who purchased a ticket from 1st February 2024 will automatically be issued with a full refund and we apologise for any inconvenience caused.”

Entry tickets to the London attraction cost £29 for a full-paying adult and £19 for a child.

Since the attraction opened last year, it has received a 3.5/5 star rating from 427 reviews on TripAdvisor.

One person called the BBC Earth Experience fantastic saying: “My husband and I really enjoyed this experience and were very impressed by the photography.

“Lots of young children were there with their parents or in school groups and it was a fantastic learning opportunity for them.”

Someone else added: “I’m thrilled, it was the best experience I’ve had in a long time, and I hope I can come back and enjoy it even more.”

Meanwhile, other people who visited the attraction weren’t bowled over by their visit.

Someone wrote: “Please don’t waste your time or money. It really isn’t what is described, and is a complete letdown. Just watch [the show] on the TV or YouTube. I am completely disappointed.”

Another person wrote: “Some excellent filming and photography. The content was good, but there was nothing that we could not have seen on BBC at home.

“The absence of any reading material was particularly disappointing.”

The BBC Earth Experience isn’t the only London attraction that’s closed its doors for good in recent weeks.

At the start of the year, KidZania London very suddenly shut up shop after eight years in the business.

The attraction was home to a huge 75,000sqft entertainment centre where children could play out adult jobs in a small town that they had to run.

Alton Towers has been forced to close one of its attractions after 21 years.

And these popular theme park rides are no longer available to ride in the UK.

Three immersive attractions to visit in the UK

Despite the BBC Earth Experience shutting up shop, there are plenty of other immersive attractions to visit in the UK.

  • The Outernet became London’s most visited tourist attraction thanks to its free entry. Located next to Tottenham Court Road tube station, the building is packed with floor-to-ceiling screens displaying interactive images and atmospheric surround sound
  • Bubble Planet invites people to embark on a “voyage through fantastical, pastel landscapes designed to appeal to all 5 senses”. The experience in London provides its guests with 11 different fully interactive zones and also has a unique virtual reality experience
  • Wake the Tiger is the world’s very first amazement park. The immersive experience transports visitors to the imaginary world of Meridia. The walk-through attraction features 27 unique art installations including strobe lighting, hidden portals and doorways, and rooms with moving parts.
