How to store carrots: Keep them fresh 15 days longer by storing them ‘correctly’ in fridge

It may seem obvious to keep carrots in your fridge, but it turns out there is a “proper” technique to storing them that will stop them from spoiling.

Mark Davis, an expert from the home appliance website Fridge, has shared that many people have been storing carrots the wrong way.

He said: “Carrots are a versatile vegetable, but they can lose their crispness and taste if not stored correctly.

“Inadequate storage can also lead to faster spoilage, waste, and potentially harmful bacteria growth.”

Carrots are very sensitive to humidity and a high moisture level in the fridge will cause carrots to begin going mouldy or slimy, so the key to keeping them fresh is to allow plenty of air circulation.

Simply rinse the carrots under tap water to remove any dirt or debris, as this prevents bacteria from spoiling the carrots and shortening their shelf life.

After washing the carrots you must then ensure they are completely dry before placing them in the fridge.

Mark said: “Any excess moisture can lead to premature rot. Lay out your clean carrots on a clean kitchen towel or paper towels and gently pat them dry.”

Then, place punch some holes in a plastic bag, wrap them in paper towels and place them in the fridge.

Once the carrots are in a plastic bag, store them somewhere cool and dry in the fridge such as the crisp drawer, at a temperature between zero Celsius and four Celsius.

Mark added: “By adhering to these best practices for fridge storage, you ensure that your carrots retain their taste and nutritional benefits, ready to be used in your next culinary creation.”
