How to ripen avocados quickly with clever 10-minute hack

Storing avocados in a paper bag with either an apple or a banana is one way to ripen this fruit quickly.

However, for those looking for a faster way to get the job done, there is a hack that ripens avocados in just 10 minutes.

@lorafied took to TikTok to share how you can ripen an avocado in 10 minutes by putting the fruit in the oven.

Lora captioned the video: “Insane avocado hack. Ripen an avocado in 10 minutes. Let me know if you try it.”

Lora started by taking a “hard avocado” and wrapped it in tin foil before putting it in a preheated oven for 10 minutes.

Avocados will release ethylene gas, which ultimately promotes ripening. Because of the foil wrapping, the fruit is essentially surrounded by its own ethylene gas.

Over time, the gas becomes more concentrated, which should speed up the ripening process.

Together, the heat of the oven and the ethylene gas will work to soften the fruit.

The oven needs to be set to 200F/180 fan/gas mark 4. Taking the avocado out of the oven, Lora sliced it open and the fruit appeared to be perfectly ripe.

Unsure of whether the avocado tasted as good as a ripe one, one TikTok used asked this. In response to the question, Lora replied: “Yes it does.”

While this hack was effective for Lora when demonstrating it, she pointed out that some avocados may be “tougher than others” so may require “up to an hour” in the oven.

For those who want to store avocados once they are ripe, they should be kept ideally whole and in the fridge in an airtight container.

For those storing cut avocados, rub the cut surface with a little lime or lemon juice to prevent browning and then stash them in an airtight container (or wrapped tightly in plastic) in the fridge.

Cut avocados will only last a day or two in the fridge before turning mushy or developing unappealing brown spots while whole ripe avocados won’t last much longer than that.
