Avocados are the internet’s favourite fruit. Everywhere you click, there’s a discussion about how healthy it is, whether it’s considered a fruit or a vegetable and how to make the best avocado on toast or guacamole.
But one thing many hate about avocados is that they can take a long time to ripen.
For those waiting days for their under-ripe avocados to ripen, a cooking pro has shared a nifty trick she uses to speed up the process.
Taking to her TikTok page @katcancook, Kathleen Ashmore shared a video on how you just need two items to “ripen an avocado overnight”.
Households will need a brown paper bag and either an apple or a banana. Kathleen opted for an apple.
The expert explained that these two fruits “contain a natural gas called ethylene that will speed up ripening”.
Simply place the under-ripe avocado in the bag with an apple or banana, fold the bag over and seal it with a clip.
Showing the camera the inside of the avocado that’s ripened the next day, Kathleen said: “Next day, we’ll get exactly what we want”.
Taking to the comments section, fellow TikTok users shared their thoughts on this. @stephblooms wrote: “This worked perfectly for me.”
@lynnwist commented: “Omg it’s actually genius. My rock-hard avocado was ripe the next day and it even tasted amazing.”
@daphnekarlajo said: “Awesome tip! A must for avocado lovers.”@kaylakleinman replied: One of my favourite tricks.”
If your avocado is the perfect ripeness, but you’re not quite ready to use it, you can always store the avocado in the fridge.
The cool temperature from the fridge will allow you to hold on to the avocados for a few extra days.
If you’ve already cut into the avocado, prevent it from turning brown by leaving the pit in, squeezing it with lemon juice, and covering it with plastic wrap.
