How to preserve boiled eggs: Try easy 1-ingredient method

Boiled eggs are a filling and nutritious snack to have on hand, but their strong smell can make your fridge smell funny.

There are simple ways to preserve eggs and keep them fresh, which an expert has shared with Express.co.uk in an exclusive interview.

Vlatka lake, storage expert at Space Station, said: “If you leave hard-boiled eggs in their shells they will last up to one week, whereas a peeled boiled egg will stay fresh for only a few days.

“If you’ve already peeled the eggs, they should be stored in a bowl of water with a lid to keep them from drying out. Change the water daily to keep it fresh.

“Alternatively, you can store peeled eggs in an airtight container with a damp paper towel to keep them moist. Keeping them sealed helps prevent any odours from the fridge and harmful microorganisms from disrupting your eggs.”

If you wish to neutralise the strong odour coming out of your boiled eggs, there is a simple one-ingredient solution, which involves submerging them in vinegar within a sealed jar.

Prioritising hygiene, sterilise the jars to prevent contamination. Opt for preserve jars with secure lids for optimal sealing.

Clean the jars thoroughly with warm, soapy water, followed by a rinse. Then, place them in the oven at the lowest temperature for approximately half an hour.

While the jars sterilise, boil the eggs and let them cool in their cooking water for about 15  minutes. Once cooled, peel the eggs.

At the same time, prepare the preserving liquid by combining equal parts water and distilled white vinegar in a pot.

Include a garlic clove and your preferred spices. Bring the mixture to a boil then let it cool for 10 minutes.

Carefully transfer the peeled eggs into the sterilised jar, followed by the cooled vinegar solution.

Seal the jar tightly and refrigerate immediately to snack on your eggs whenever you feel like it.
