Everyone loves watermelon, particularly in the hot summer months.
But choosing the right fruit can be difficult. Oftem melons aren’t sweet enough or have an unfortunate grainy texture. It can be almost impossible to know how to select the right one – unless you know what you’re doing.
However, TikTok account TheMealPrepManual, explained some simple tests you can do to find the perfect watermelon. He said: “Test number one, the weight test. A good watermelon will be heavy for its size. When compared to other watermelons of similar size, the one that is heavier is more likely to be sweet and juicy.”
The second test is called the knock test. “You’re looking for a hollow sound”, he said, showing how to gently ‘knock’ on the fruit.
He then goes on to explain test three. “The type test, seeded watermelons are almost always better than seedless.”
Another test you can do is the field spot test. “The yellow field spot can indicate the watermelon has had time to sit in the field and ripen on the vine,” he said.
Alongside this, you can even do the webbing test. A good amount of webbing indicates the plant was well pollinated, making the watermelon likely to be sweeter.
Today marks National Watermelon Day, an informal holiday celebrated on August 3rd each year.
Watermelon Day is not an official national holiday, but it has garnered popularity on social media and is celebrated by fruit fans, farmers and health enthusiasts alike.
Celebrations of Watermelon Day can include various activities such as watermelon-eating contests, seed-spitting competitions, carving watermelons into artistic sculptures, or simply enjoying slices of watermelon at picnics and backyard barbecues. It’s also an opportunity for agricultural organisations and health advocates to promote the nutritional benefits of watermelon, which is rich in vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants.
