Vegetables need to be stored correctly for them to last weeks and sometimes even months.
It doesn’t surface just shoving the vegetables in the fridge and hoping for the best, especially when it comes to lettuce.
Bagged salad leaves and heads of lettuce don’t have a long shelf life once they are stuck in the fridge, as many of them turn brown, wilted and soggy.
When stored in the fridge in its original packaging, lettuce is nearly impossible to try and keep at its best for more than a few days.
However, with just one step, you can keep your lettuce fresh and crunchy for weeks on end.
Taking to TikTok, cooking expert @cookingatpamsplace has shared a video on how she keeps lettuce “fresh longer”.
She said: “Do you ever buy lettuce from the store and it’s packaged something like this just to bring it home and open it up and it starts to go bad really quick? I’ll show you what to do.”
Pam starts by opening a bag of lettuce and wrapping it in a piece of tin foil, making sure the lettuce is completely covered.
The foil will help retain moisture in the leaves, keeping them fresh and crisp for much longer.
She said: “Make sure it’s wrapped tight. Your lettuce will stay fresh for 30 days and more.”
This particular storage hack is also recommended for storing celery and is very successful at keeping celery crisp, with no signs of decay for months.
Another suggestion is to keep the whole lettuce in a ziplock back with a piece of paper towel to absorb any moisture.
Households can also chop the lettuce head up and place it inside an airtight plastic container.
However, it’s recommended that lettuce stored this way be consumed within a couple of days.
