How to keep drinks cool: Experts share ‘quickest method’

Boozers rejoice as a genius hack to rapidly chill your cans and bottles has been unveiled, sparing you the dread of tepid tipples during those scorching summer gatherings.

No more dashing back and forth to the fridge; this nifty trick lets you stay put in your sunny spot in the garden.

The savvy team at Which? have been on a mission to find the quickets way to cool your beverages in the garden, putting eight different methods through their paces.

The winning technique is delightfully straightforward, involving just a common kitchen ingredient, as revealed on their Instagram account.

Here’s the tip: after prepping your cooler or any container with water and ice, simply sprinkle in some salt.

Why? Because saltwater freezes at a lower temperature than plain water, reports Wales Online.

Which? detailed the science behind it, stating that adding salt to an icy water mix creates an “icy slushy solution” that dips below freezing point, thus accelerating the cooling of your drinks.

This means your beverages get chilled quicker and stay refreshingly cold for an extended period compared to using just ice and water.

On their Instagram, Which? shared the results: “We tested eight different methods for quickly chilling drinks and without a doubt this was the quickest method. A useful hack to know for future hosting when your fridge and freezer are both already filled to bursting point and you need to cool down drinks fast.

“Why does adding salt chill drinks faster? Salt water has a lower freezing point than regular water.

“While the temperature of a bucket of ice and water might hover around – or slightly above – 0C, adding salt will mean that the temperature of the icy slushy solution can actually be less than zero. These sub-zero temperatures will chill your drink faster and ultimately leave it colder.”

Other al fresco drinkers were quick to share their hacks online, with Babscooks suggesting: “Wrap your bottle in a wet piece of kitchen roll and put it in the freezer. SET AN ALARM on your phone for ten minutes and voila! Set the alarm tho or you’ll forget lol.”

Luis. kanashiro offered a more technical tip, writing: “If you add 0.5L of 96 alcohol to that bucket, it will lower the temperature to -9C and will get a 0C beer in 15 to 20 minutes.”
