This artist, who did theatre like Aap Toh Aap Hai, Fabulation and Convenience, films like Rivem (also wrote for it) , Whygotosearchfor…, and Connections and has written for Theatre, including a soon to be produced full length play called Subject, which looks at the inner life of a couple in which half the time belongs to the male and the other half belongs to the female. She has written, produced, directed, built staging for and starred in Convenience, which explores the protagonist trying to come to terms with her hallucinations in the presence of the Audience.
All her work is the result of her childhood experiences in Gujarat and clearly but generically states the direct result of South Asian disporia. This further explains that artists who incorporate their cultural roots into their work bring a unique richness to their creations. “Cultural roots in my work are symbolised by themes of trauma as a result of previous and recent chaos ensued in India as a society. The ways in which it affects youth is what I am predominantly interested in expressing wherever it is I work.” she shares.
It is essential today to incorporate cultural elements into modern art to preserve these traditions while also making them more relevant for today’s audiences, including the younger brigade to motivate them to get closer to their roots in creative practices, be it in the arts, sciences or more personal, societal spheres.
Janya Govani explains that even as a very young artist, she has always focused on doing the same. As a trained classical singer, she has ensured that she blends that with her knowledge of Western music. Even as a playwright, she works on subjects the world needs to know more about and gives them a modern treatment that people who have gone through similar experiences can find inspiration from. She creates a dynamic and immersive experience for her audiences by doing so.
