Heatwave to persist into February

A heatwave with persistently high temperatures is expected to continue until Saturday in Gauteng and parts of Limpopo.

Following a period of persistent rain from December to early January, Gauteng residents are now experiencing the first heatwave of the year, with temperatures reaching up to 36°C in some areas this week.

On Saturday, Johannesburg is forecasted to have a minimum temperature of 19°C, rising to a high of 33°C. In Pretoria, even hotter conditions are anticipated, with a minimum of 21°C and a maximum of 35°C. While temperatures are expected to drop slightly on Sunday, the weather will remain warm with little chance of rain.

Robert Mulaudzi, spokesperson for the City of Johannesburg Emergency Management Services, advises residents to exercise caution during this heatwave and hot weather conditions.

“Extremely hot temperatures expected in most parts of the City of Johannesburg. Residents are urged to stay hydrated, drink lots of water, and try and avoid direct sunlight, especially between 11am and 3pm in the afternoon.

Heatwave to persist into the weekend

“Those who are working directly in sunlight take regular breaks and drink lots of water,” Mulaudzi said as per Citizen.

With the heatwave is expected to continue in Limpopo and Gauteng until Saturday, severe thunderstorms are expected over most parts of KwaZulu-Natal, Mpumalanga and the Eastern Cape.
