National Conference leader Omar Abdullah’s criticism of filming the web series Maharani inside the Jammu and Kashmir legislative assembly has sparked a heated debate, with director Hansal Mehta defending the practice. The controversy underscores India’s complex relationship with film shoots in public spaces.

On X (formerly known as Twitter), Abdullah denounced the filming of the Huma Qureshi starrer show, calling it “an absolute shame” and an insult to the legislative body’s historical significance. He pointed out that the complex, once dedicated to serious discussions, was now reduced to a “set for TV dramas” under the BJP government.
Mehta, known for his bold films like Shahid and Aligarh, countered Abdullah’s argument. He questioned how filming could be considered disrespectful to democracy or demeaning the legislative body. He emphasized the right of every citizen, including actors and extras, to work with dignity and respect in public spaces.
Drawing a parallel with international practices, Mehta highlighted how other countries readily offer access to public buildings for filming. He attributed India’s reputation as an “unfriendly shooting location” to such “unwelcoming attitudes,” leading filmmakers to shoot abroad more often.
While disagreeing with Abdullah’s stance, Mehta expressed his respect for the politician. However, he emphasized the need to avoid “disrespectful, regressive, and myopic” viewpoints that hinder cultural expression and creativity.
