One of musician Justin Bieber’s first hits was his breakup song “Baby,” released (brace for it) over 14 years ago on his studio debut, My World 2.0. But this week, that lament became an expression of joy, as his wife, Hailey Bieber (nee Baldwin), gave birth to the couple’s first child.
The couple broke the news via Instagram, which has long been their mouthpiece of choice. A photo of an infant’s foot, stroked by a French-tipped nail, was captioned “WELCOME HOME JACK BLUES BIEBER,” on Justin’s grid Friday, a bear emoji punctuating the all-caps announcement. Shortly thereafter, wife Hailey shared the post via her Instagram stories.
Hailey and Justin Bieber also used Instagram to tell the world that they were expecting in May, posting a carousel of photos depicting a meadow-set vow renewal officiated by Judah Smith, the beleaguered pastor of Seattle-area megachurch Churchome. In the photos, Hailey wore a dress that appeared to feature her pregnant belly, and in some, Justin cupped her rounded stomach. In a subsequent set of images, he seemed to confirm the news, captioning one photo: “They wish baby, they wish.”
This is the first child for the couple, who will celebrate their sixth anniversary in September. Beyond that, there’s not too much else we know: Neither Justin’s nor Hailey’s representatives have responded to Vanity Fair’s request for comment. That’s not a surprise, as Hailey—who grew up in the spotlight as the daughter of actor Stephen Baldwin— has been understandably media-shy, even telling the Wall Street Journal in 2022 that journalism “has always been a disgusting thing.” In a GQ interview last year, she said that if and when she got pregnant, “you, as in the internet, will be the last to know.” It’s reasonable to assume, in that case, that the same holds true for the actual blessed event.
But one can glean from past remarks that she’s already anxious about Jack Blues’s future. “I want kids so bad, but I get scared,” she told the Sunday Times in 2023. “It’s enough that people say things about my husband or my friends. I can’t imagine having to confront people saying things about a child.”
“We can only do the best we can to raise them,” she concluded. “As long as they feel loved and safe.”
