SEASON 1 RECAP

In season one of Gyeongseong Creature, we meet Jang Tae Sang (played by Park Seo Joon) and Yoon Chae Ok (played by Han So Hee) who were alive during the Japanese-occupied era of the Korean peninsula. They uncover human experiments by the Japanese and unite to fight against the malpractice. In due course, the two find solace in each other and fall in love with each other.

Jang Tae Sang and Yoon Chae Ok had a tearful separation in the first season. In the season, we see that Tae Sang had moved on to live a successful and fulfilling life with his employees until Lady Maeda [Claudia Kim] attacked him again to seek revenge. He was infected by the Najin and continued to live with that body until the present. In season two, we see that Tae Sang is now living as Ho Jae. He had the Najin removed from his body a year ago from the present time. He had forgotten his memories but after taking the Najin again, he could remember everything vividly.

What runs parallel between both seasons is that as the season comes to a finish, Tae Sang and Chae Ok both fight to save each other from the evil plans of Lady Maeda and team. There were quite a few similarities in this season and the first one. Several characters from the previous season like Lady Maeda, Dr Kato make guest appearances and help us in revisiting the past plot.

SEASON 2 REVIEW

Gyeongseong Creature season 2 brings with it a continuation to a tale of gory, horrific and emotionally charged narrative. Tae Sang aka Ho Jae and Chae Ok survived the winter of 1945 even though they were separated. In the present, we see the two find their way towards each despite the tragedy that followed. Park and Han shine as they reprise their roles, bringing depth to a narrative that explores the haunting consequences of the najin epidemic. Set against a backdrop of a shadowy biotech corporation, the plot twists keep viewers on edge while the romance between their characters remains both poignant and heart-wrenching. Central to the conflict is the Kuruko leader (Lee Mu Saeng), who orchestrates sinister plans involving najin-enhanced soldiers, posing a significant threat to Ho-jae and Chae-ok. Additionally, Seung Jo [Bae Hyeon Seong] plays a pivotal role in the unfolding drama, further complicating their quest for answers. The season shifts focus to the deepening romance between Ho-jae and Chae-ok, blending action, horror, and emotional stakes.

Speaking of the pacing and cinematography, all seven episodes are just under and hour each. We see a darker visual palette in this season, reflecting the severity of events that are about to follow. The first few episodes take their time to unravel the story but the pace picks up after episode four when Ho Jae begins to learn the truth about his past.

If one tries to be nitpicky about this season, it can be wrapped up in a 3-hour long movie. For if you were to take a closer look, the events that happen are momentous for a brief period. What comes before and after that are just fillers. Be it Seung Jo double crossing the couple, Ho Jae regaining his memories or even Kuroko working his own hidden agenda, these events can be condensed into a much more densely packed action narrative that keeps the audience on the edge of their seat.

The makers took quite long to draw out the chemistry and emotionally tug between Ho Jae and Chae Ok. The fans who in season one said that the romance was not needed, might continue their stance for this season as well. A platonic connection that follows a ‘ride or die together’ narrative would have had a stronger impact.

Coming to the acting part, Park Seo Joon and Han Seo Hee’s characters go through a similar experience of pain and suffering at the hand of Lady Maeda. Hence, their expressions are a reflection of each other. They give their best shot to emulate the heartbreak and pain and they do fair justice to that. Han So Hee had a set of emotions on her face for most part, occasionally softening up in Tae Sang’s presence. Park Seo Joon on the other hand showed slight variation of emotions as demanded by the character but there was not much room for him to experiment with.

As for the supporting cast, we have more or less a similar roster of stereotypical characters. Ones that are good and ones that are bad. The bad onesare truly bad and you don’t even feel like trying to understand their evil. While the brains behind the Najin and its creation could have been put to a better use (like, not making the Najin and maybe finding a cure), it does come as a surprise as to how money can easily wield and change a person’s morals and ethics.

In conclusion, there is not much new to indulge in this season. The story does movie ahead in terms of the time period, but the struggle that we see in the first season feels replicated in the second season. Though the heartbreaking love story does in fact  The Najin’s appearance is few and far between, the ever dangerously stunning appearance that we saw in season one was amiss this season. The gore and horror doubled as we saw that the Najin is learning to adapt to its host. With Chae Ok and Ho Jae, we know that the Najin does not mutate the host’s body into something hideous but it makes it presence felt upon the sightest of provocation.

SEASON 2 ENDING EXPLAINED

In the finale episode titled ‘Marginal Man’ of season 2, we see that Ho Jae manages to break Chae Ok out of the water tank. Chae Ok’s Najin comes out of her body and she loses her memory just like Ho Jae did a year ago. Lady Maeda loses her life after Seung Ho attacks her. That puts an end to one chapter but at the same time we are unsure of Seung Ho’s whereabouts later.

The lab’s activities are brought out to the public and the entire facility comes under fire for its morally and ethically dubious activities. Kurokos leader wants to take Chae Ok’s Najin for his girlfriend but he is unable to do so after the water tank breaks and the Najin is dead. Where did Kuroko go? Did he manage to retrieve the Najin?

Right now, there are no details of a new season for the show. If the finale episode is to be believed, there could be some scope for a renewal considering the loose ends. Chae Ok has lost her memories but Tae Sang remembers, it seems. This is because when they cross paths again, he looks at her lovingly as if he remembers her. Chae Ok feels a sense of longing and familiarity upon seeing him. Since Kuroko leader absconds, it can be fair to assume that he might have taken important data with him to recreate a Najin that woud save his girlfriend’s life. However, towards the end Seung Jo is seen in the lab and seems to be involved in infected bottles of water which could be potential najin epidemic. What remains to be seen now is whether the makers would take the story ahead with a new season.
