One of the students has since then been released from hospital.
Around 300 international students from Kazakhstan, Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Uzbekistan and Sri Lanka are currently studying at the Gujarat University while around 70 students stay in the Hostel Block A, where the incident took place.
Talking about the incident, Ahmedabad Police Commissioner GS Malik informed the media that the incident had taken place around 10.30 pm on Saturday, when the foreign students were praying in the hostel building. “A mob of around 25 people entered the premises and questioned them on why they were offering Namaz in the hostel, and asked them to go to a mosque for the same,” he added.
“Following this, an argument broke out and the accused assaulted the students, resorted to stone pelting as well as damaged the properties. They ransacked the hostel rooms, belongings and vehicles of the foreign students,” Malik said, adding that while the police received a call at 10:51 pm, a PCR van reached the spot by 10:56 pm.
“We have taken serious note of the incident and strict action will be taken,” Malik added.Police has already registered an FIR and identified an accused so far. Nine teams have been constituted to look into the matter. The Ministry of External affairs also responded to the incident and said, “An incidence of violence took place at Gujarat University in Ahmedabad yesterday. State government is taking strict action against the perpetrators. Two foreign students were injured in the clash. One of them has been discharged from hospital after receiving medical attention. MEA is in touch with the Gujarat government.”
