MSNBC political analyst Susan Del Percio had a short answer for why Republican lawmakers would oppose legislation allowing remote voting for new moms: “Because they’re idiots.”
Del Percio, a former political strategist, joined MSNBC host Chris Jansing on Monday to discuss proposed legislation from Rep. Anna Paulina Luna (R-FL), a member of the House Freedom Caucus, that would reintroduce proxy voting in the House to help new mothers. Luna gave birth to a son in August. As The Wall Street Journal reported, the proposal has gotten bipartisan support but stalled with GOP leadership as they have been so critical of proxy voting in the past.
Rep. Sara Jacobs (D-CA) also introduced the proposal with Luna.
“If you really want representation in this body of what the country is, you have working moms,” Luna told the Journal.
Asked why lawmakers would oppose the proposal, Del Percio declared that Republicans are “idiots.”
“Because they’re idiots. I don’t know how else to put it. This makes all the sense in the world. This has bipartisan support on it,” she said.
Del Percio chalked it up to a larger “war on women.”
“Republican leadership, especially seeing what happened with Katie Britt, you know, putting a woman in the kitchen to give a response and so many other issues, this is something they could have gotten done and frankly it wouldn’t have had a whole lot of fanfare, but now the spotlight is on them again, saying they basically want to have a war on women.”
