The body has not been formally identified and the probe is still a missing-person enquiry, but Gaynor’s family is being supported by specialist officers.

And since the devastating discovery, a family friend told The Times: “Gaynor’s husband Clive is totally lost.

“He doesn’t understand at all what’s happened.”

Gaynor’s daughter, Charlotte, shared the Norfolk Constabulary update over the tragic discovery on Facebook.

She and her sister Alexandra have spent the past week desperately asking for people to come forward as the search for their mum Gaynor stretched over seven days.

Earlier this week, Alexandra to Facebook appealing for help finding her mum, asking: “If anyone knows anything, please do contact the police.

“We want her home.”

Chief Superintendent Dave Buckley offered his condolences to the family “at this difficult and distressing time”.

He added there is no evidence of third party involvement in Gaynor’s disappearance.

Speaking last night, he said: “We remain open-minded to the circumstances of Gaynor’s disappearance and will continue to pursue all lines of enquiry to ascertain why she went missing.”

And he added: “I am keen to say that this remains a missing person enquiry at this stage.

“I am also satisfied at the moment based on the evidence that we have that Gaynor did not meet anybody on the way to the park and we now have a better understanding of her movements through the city centre.

“While this is not the outcome we wished for, our search has always predominantly focused on the river and the park. We will now need to complete a post-mortem examination to establish means of death.

“I would reiterate at this stage that there is no evidence of third party involvement. Nothing in our enquiries have changed this position.”
