Gauteng residents can now breathe a sigh of relief as the cold front has passed.
Temperatures have dropped significantly in the past few days after a rather warm September. Johannesburg and surrounding areas saw temperatures dip from the 30s down to single digits in a space of a few days.
The cold snap hit the Western Cape on Wednesday before spreading to other parts of South Africa, bringing snowfall and strong winds. In KwaZulu-Natal and Free State, heavy snowfall led to road closures and stranded motorists on Saturday.
The N3 highway connecting Johannesburg and Durban was significantly affected, with emergency services working to reach people in their vehicles on closed sections of the road.
On Saturday, hundreds of motorists were stranded on snow-blocked roads in parts of KZN and Free State. KZN MEC for Transport and Human Settlements, Siboniso Duma said his department had deployed additional graders to assist with the rescue operations.
Clear skies in Gauteng this week as cold front makes way
It appears as if winter took its last breath this past week with temperatures dropping significantly across the country. For Gauteng and surrounding provinces, hot temperatures are expected in the week.
Gauteng Weather tweeted on Sunday that the province can anticipate warmer temperatures after an intense cold front, with the mercury hitting the low 30s by Friday in Pretoria.
In Johannesburg, temperatures are expected to gradually increase throughout the week. On Monday, the South African Weather Service predicts overcast conditions for the city of gold. A minimum of 7°C with temperatures reaching a high of 19°C.
