Fried eggs are ‘perfect’ when cooked with one extra ingredient

Few things beat jammy fried eggs for breakfast but the golden yolk is hard to master without leaving the white gooey and undercooked.

Flipping the egg is one way to try and balance out the texture, but this lends itself to the eggs being broken or overdone.

A YouTube cooking duo have shared their foolproof remedy to this problem, claiming to have “cracked the code to frying the ultimate fried egg”.

In a video shared to the YouTube channel, Klar Brothers Bistro, Ken said: “Picture this: a perfectly fried egg with a flawless, runny yolk that oozes out with every bite. How do we achieve this egg-challenge, you ask?”

He noted that one tool is essential for this cooking hack to work – a pan with a lid to fit.

Ken explained: “It’s as simple as adding a teaspoon of water to the pan while frying your egg.

“Trapping the evaporating water under a lid will create a steamy atmosphere that gently cooks the yolk, resulting in that silky-smooth texture we all crave.”

To cook the perfect fried egg, first heat a pan over medium heat with a small knob of butter to grease it. Add the lid and leave the butter to melt away before cracking in the egg.

Ken explained that the next step is crucial for success; quickly cover the cracked egg with one teaspoon of cold water. Replace the lid on the pan and let the steam work its magic. 

The YouTube cook claimed that this allows the egg to “cook perfectly” and that the steam is responsible for the texture of the yolk which he said “will be perfect”.

There’s no need to flip the egg over when using this cooking method, as the steamed environment within the pan does the job for you.

It is possible to cook more than one sunny-side egg at once, just add one teaspoon more water per egg.

For over-easy eggs, allow 30 seconds or a minute longer of cooking to ensure the white is more cooked and yolk runny.

Over medium and overwell eggs can also be cooked this way as long as the cooking duration is increased.
