A senior police official said, “The armed militants fired from their sophisticated weapons targeting the Borobekra police station and the adjoining village. The guerillas also hurled bombs.”
The official said that the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) and Manipur Police personnel immediately retaliated, leading to a heavy exchange of fire between the two sides. Additional security forces have rushed to the spot.
Soon after the exchange of fire broke out, villagers, including elderly persons, women and children, were moved to safer places under security.
Manipur witnessed several violent incidents since September 1, leaving at least 12 people, including two women, elderly persons and a retired soldier, dead and over 20 others injured.
Of the 12 deaths, six were killed in Jiribam, inhabited by people from different communities. Manipur has witnessed hi-tech attacks by drone bombs and rocket propelled bombs. Following the attack by drone bombs and rocket propelled bombs, the security forces have deployed an anti-drone system to repel the rogue drones.Manipur has witnessed repeated incidents of arms loot since May 3 last year. At least 226 people have been killed, 1,500 injured and 60,000 displaced since violence broke out between the Meitei and Kuki-Zomi communities on May 3 last year.
