The former British Olympic swimmer Antony James who represented Great Britain in the London 2012 Olympics has been convicted of raping two teenage girls and is set to face jail time. Antony James previously had denied all the charges. The hearing for Antony James happened at the Plymouth Crown Court. James was a friendly and charming man, but as per the prosecution Antony James is a “serial liar and manipulator.” Antony James has been convicted of irrelevantly touching one of the girls when she was under the age of 16 and getting the other to send him sexually explicit pictures when she was under the age of 16. The offences took place over 10 years between 2012 and 2022. Anthony James was not found guilty of controlling behaviour and two other image-related offences to a third female who was over the age of 18 at that time. During James’ arrest in January 2022, he was training to be a police officer for Devon and Cornwall Police. Antony James is no longer an employee of the force. The prosecution has been given a week to apply for retrial for six other sexual charges in which the jury was unable to reach verdicts. One of the victims told the jury that, “I didn’t feel like I could, or should, say no because I really loved him and trusted him… I felt like if I didn’t seem interested in the same things he was interested in, he wouldn’t think I was grown up enough.”
