Former CNN senior political analyst and anchor John Avlon won the Democratic primary for New York’s 1st Congressional District on Tuesday.
Avlon – who announced his departure from CNN in February – defeated Nancy Goroff with more than 70% of the vote. The former CNN analyst will face Republican incumbent Rep. Nick LaLota (R-NY) in the 2024 election.
Mediaite first learned of Avlon’s intentions to run for Congress just days after he announced his exit from CNN. Avlon confirmed the news that same month.
“We need to build the broadest possible coalition to defeat Donald Trump, defend our democracy, and win back the House from his MAGA minions who don’t even seem interested in solving problems anymore,” he said during a video announcing his candidacy. “Democrats can’t afford to lose this fight.”
Prior to his at CNN, Avlon worked as the editor-in-chief of the Daily Beast and as a speechwriter for former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani.
In recent years, Avlon has repeatedly criticized Giuliani, and last year he described his former boss’ comments about the 2020 election as “unforgivable.”
Avlon has authored several books in favor of centrism, including Independent Nation: How Centrists Can Change American Politics and Wingnuts: How the Lunatic Fringe is Hijacking America.
