Foods you shouldn’t store in the fridge as they ‘spoil fast’

Syncorganics – a new health and wellness business about to launch – posted a video listing all the foods you shouldn’t be storing in the fridge and why.

According to Syncorganics, certain foods can “lose flavour, spoil faster and in some cases grow bacteria” when they’re stored in the fridge.

One such ingredient is the cucumber, which is said to “develop spots and soften when kept in the fridge”.

Another ingredient is hard cheese, such as Parmesan, which may last longer in the fridge, but “doesn’t require refrigeration”.

Citing the US Department of Agriculture, Syncorganics said Parmesan would do particularly well “stored in an airtight glass container in a cool, dark place”.

Even berries, mango, avocados, basil, and tomatoes would do better stored outside of the fridge, it is claimed.

Avocados and mangoes, for example, are “best stored at room temperature” while basil left in the fridge will wilt.

Instead, “soft herbs should be treated like flowers – cut and stored in a glass of water”.

As for berries, they could lose their vibrancy, taste and texture if stored in the fridge.

“Store them at room temperature and consume within a few days,” Syncorganics advised.

“Refrigeration negatively influences the ripening process and taste of tomatoes,” said Syncorganics. “It damages the tomato enzymes and reduces juiciness too.”

Syncorganics added: “Onions and garlic are a root vegetable and thrive at room temperature. Cool temperatures cause onion and garlic to go soft and increase risk of bacteria growth if exposed.”

Foods not to store in the fridge

  1. Avocados
  2. Basil
  3. Cucumbers
  4. Hard cheese
  5. Berries
  6. Mango
  7. Onion
  8. Garlic
  9. Tomato

While these may come as a surprise to many, are the claims 100 percent verified? According to Tesco, avocados are best kept refrigerated “to prevent over ripening”.

But Martha Stewart agrees that basil is best store outside of the fridge adding they can be kept in a glass jar of water, akin to a flower.

As for cucumbers, Martha Stewart said: “The refrigerator is the best place to store cucumbers and keep them fresh for longer.” She also said this of berries – and mangoes once they have ripened, but not before.

When it comes to tomatoes, garlic and onion, though, they really are better off outside of the fridge. Meanwhile, Wisconsin Cheese noted that hard cheese, like Parmesan, are best stored in cheese paper.
