Foodies fume at ‘extortionately expensive’ Subway menu

Subway has been accused of making its menu “extortionately expensive” in the UK after a customer claimed he “almost passed out” in shock during a recent visit.

The American restaurant and takeaway chain, which specialises in ‘sub’ sandwiches, offers a variety of options for punters in almost every town across Britain.

Back in 2017, Subway announced a hike in prices when it added a 20% VAT charge to its hot foods menu, and since then costs have slowly crept up in line with the cost of living crisis. “Subway has become extortionately expensive,” rued a disgruntled customer on Reddit.

“Popped into Subway for some food on our day out today and nearly passed out at the till… two footlong subs with one bottle of drink was £25!

“What ever happened to subway being cheap and reliable? I remember getting a small sub for three quid or less a few years ago. The food to cost ratio has got to be the lowest out of all the chains. You could walk out of McDonald’s with a feast and that’s hardly cheap nowadays either. Greggs could feed a family with change for £25! What’s so expensive about a sub with two scoops of chicken and lettuce in?”

Scores of others were quick to vent their frustrations too. “Used to get a footlong with a drink for a fiver about 8 years ago,” one person said in response. “I understand things are more expensive now but not that much more. I feel like Subway have priced themselves out of the market.”

Another agreed: “It’s ridiculous. When they opened you could get £5 footlong meal deal. Had a footlong meal the other day for the first time in years and it cost me almost £15!”

A third added: “I went in to one the other day as was going past and hadn’t had one for years, looked for the classic footlong melt on the board, then saw the prices of the ones available and just left.”

And a fourth claimed: “Partner and I had our first Subway in over three years delivered last week. Not only was it over £25 for two foot longs a basic side and a cookie, they forgot the cookies, my sandwich had sweetcorn which I didn’t order, was just about toasted, the wrong sauce, extra cheese I didn’t order and missing pickles.

“My GF’s was toasted, which she didn’t order, my sauce but mine didn’t have her’s, she had peppercorns she didn’t order. All in all it was tasteless and we vowed that they had their last chance.”

A fifth suggested eating elsewhere. “It’s called price gouging,” they said. “As long as people will pay it, they’ll keep charging it. Spend your money with a local place where you can actually get a good meal for the same or better price. Keep those pounds in your local community and out if the pockets of excessively greedy multinational feeding corporations.”

However, others highlighted how similar outlets have upped their prices in the same way. “KFC too,” one person said. “I know it’s never been the cheapest fast food but was around £24 last week for a large boneless banquet and mighty bucket for one. Portions definitely not as big as they used to be either.”

And a second penned: “I feel the same about McDonald’s. I had a single Big Mac sandwich for £4.99 the other day. It wasn’t even ready to go, I had to wait over 10 minutes. What is the point of junk fast food if it is neither cheap nor fast?”
