Fix mushy overcooked rice with simple hack that takes only a few minutes

Overcooked rice is wet and mushy, but despite taking all precautions to avoid it, sometimes it can still happen due to a simple mistake.

Mushy or soggy rice is typically the result of overcooking and absorbing too much liquid, which renders it unsuitable for some dishes like sushi.

When rice overcooks and takes in excess water, the grains can split open, resulting in a starchy and sticky texture.

Fortunately, there is an easy fix to return your rice to a nice consistency again, and it only takes one kitchen appliance and and a few minutes.

  • Spread the rice out on a plate or a sheet pan lined with parchment paper.
  • Place the rice in the fridge for 20 minutes or until it has dried out enough to no longer be mushy.

  • Once the rice is fully dried, heat it until it’s ready to eat. Cover it with a paper towel or kitchen towel and microwave in one-minute increments on the highest power (level 10) until it’s warmed to your preference.

If your rice is very wet and mushy, there is a different method to let more water evaporate.

This approach allows you to fix a larger volume of rice without warming up your fridge.
