A food content creator, with a whopping 646,000 followers on her TikTok account and over 10.2 million likes, has tested five popular tricks to keep avocados fresh.
Samira Kazan, the champion of Netflix’s Crazy Delicious and known as Alphafoodie online, runs her blog posting mostly plant-based food and told her followers: “I’ve tested five avocado storing hacks. I’m going to show you the results.”
Five avocado storage tricks put to the test
Keeping them in water
This trick has become a sensation, with some saying it can keep avos fresh for four weeks. However, there is a big warning attached to this trick. The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has warned against the trick because it can cause Listeria.
It said: “The FDA does not recommend this practice. The main concern was the possibility that any residual human pathogens (Listeria monocytogenes, salmonella) that may be residing on the avocado surface may potentially multiply during the storage when submerged in water.”
“In addition, research performed by FDA scientists has shown that Listeria monocytogenes has the potential to infiltrate and internalise into the pulp of avocados when submerged in refrigerated dump tanks within 15 days during refrigerated storage.”

Lemon juice and clingfilm
People often say to put lemon juice on avocado to keep it green.
Lemon has lots of antioxidants, which can slow down how fast oxygen makes things age.
Samira said: “I like this one because after a few days it still maintained its green colour.”
Onions and avocado
Some folks reckon onions can make avocados stay fresh longer.
Onions have stuff in them that might stop avocados from going brown.
You’re supposed to keep your avocado in a container with some chopped onion to do this trick.
But Samira didn’t think this onion idea worked well. She said: “Definitely not. Not only does it fill the fridge with the smell of onion, but the whole thing is also just wrong.”
Freezing avocado slices
You can freeze avocados in lots of ways, like whole, sliced, mashed, or pureed.
Just pop the avocado into a plastic bag or a vacuum-sealed one.
“That one is great,” Samira mentioned. “In my opinion, it could be used for smoothies.”
Freezing mashed avocados
Samira said: “I like this one. They maintain the colour. They are also slightly watery – but not bad.”
Frozen avocados can last in the freezer for about four to six months.
