Fatima Sana Shaikh got in an exclusive, candid conversation where she honestly speaks of how she has discovered herself as an actor.
Riding a bike in the mountains, or wrestling her way to earn a medal or leading the country as the first woman Prime Minister of India, Fatima Sana Shaikh has donned different characters and never once failed to wow her audience. She was last seen playing the character of Indira Gandhi in Meghna Gulzar’s Sam Bahadur. In an exclusive conversation with India.com, Fatima spoke about why she refused to play Indira earlier, her equation with Sanya Malhotra and Vicky Kaushal, and why she can never say no to director Anurag Basu.
When Fatima Refused to play Indira Gandhi in Sam Bahadur
The Dhak Dhak girl had earlier spoken about not accepting the role of Indira Gandhi when it was first offered to her by the director Meghna Gulzar. When asked how she later got convinced to accept it again, Fatima said, “I wasn’t sure kyunki mujhe laga ki mai apne career mai bahut jaldi aisa character play kar rhi hun jo apko bahut responsibility se play karna padhega. I wasn’t sure ki mujhe yeh karna chaiye. But I always wanted to work with Meghna. Fir jab apka director apko bolta hai ki nahi aap karlo, toh fir aap karte ho, aap sochte nhi.”
Fatima is one actor who knows how to keep it candid and clear. With pure candour, she talked about how she discovered herself as an actor. Speaking of characters and how they affect the actors personally, Fatima shared, “Meri zindagi un characters se nahi badalti but jin logo ke sath mai kam karti hun unse badalti hai, ki woh kya value add kar rhe hai. Woh mujhe shape karta hai.”
In a world where actors find it challenging to come out of the shoes of the character, Fatima knows how to maintain her character between “cut” and “action” and between that she performs her role with utmost dedication.
Fatima’s Equation With Sanya Malhotra and Vicky Kaushal
Sanya and Fatima have done other films together and have a created a good bond. While on the sets of Sam Bahadur the characters shares a sweet-sour relationship, off the camera that had a fun time along with Vicky Kaushal. Fatima said,” Sanya to dost hai. We keep in touch and baat karte hai about life. Vicky bhi chill hi banda hai. Hum log toh hum baithke masti hi karte hai.”
‘He is like Home…’: Fatima Sana Shaikh on Anurag Basu
Speaking along the lines of relationships, Fatima spoke about how she is elated to be working with renowned director Anurag Basu. She said,” For me it’s just working with Anurga Dada, the best feeling ever. He is like home to me. It’s like going back to someone who has given you strength and in a lot of ways. His family, his wife Tani have been very supportive. There have been times when I have reached out to them and they have been my emotional support and for me that is the most valuable thing. It is important to have people who are your rock.”
