‘Fallout’s Ella Purnell Shares Her Thoughts on Wearing the Vault Suits

The Fallout TV series is coming to Prime Video tonight, giving fans their first full look at Ella Purnell as Lucy the Vault Dweller, the series’s protagonist. It’s been confirmed that the Prime Video series is going to bring the Fallout franchise new places and introduce new people, but one thing that’s not changing is the presence of the series’s iconic blue-and-yellow vault suits. When Purnell was asked about her experiences donning the iconic jumpsuits, she said it was “freeing” but also warned fans that the vault dweller lifestyle “isn’t as glamorous as it looks.”

The live-action Fallout series will follow Ella Purnell as Lucy, a Vault Dweller who leaves her Vault for the first time to head to a post-nuclear Los Angeles. Somewhere along the way, she’ll encounter Maximus (Aaron Moten), a squire with the Brotherhood of Steel, and Cooper Howard (Walter Goggins) a bounty-hunting Ghoul. The showrunners have previously confirmed that the show’s characters and settings are entirely new, but fans of Bethesda’s Fallout games will still be able to recognize elements of the game’s world, like the factions and – as we’ve found out – the costumes.

Lucy, as a Vault Dweller, will spend most of her time in the Fallout franchise’s iconic Vault suits. The blue-and-yellow suits are recognizable enough to be the starting outfit of every game and as the outfit of the franchise’s mascot, the cheerful Pip-Boy. Ella Purnell, one of the first to put on a Vault Suit in real life, sat down with ComicBook to talk about what it was like wearing the same thing every day of filming.

“I found it freeing until I realized how hard it was to pee in that day. Because you got to take off the arm gauntlets, either pip-boy, thermal in your armor, put it down, you’re butt naked in the porta potty. It’s not as glamorous as it looks.”

What Do The Other Vault Dwellers Think of the Suits?

For their part, the other Vault Dwellers mostly agree that the Vault Suits are freeing, mostly since it removes the decision on what to wear that day. Rodrigo Luzzi, who plays Reg in the Prime Video series, said that the routine was “comforting” and that the Vault Suit itself was “really comfortable.”

Annabel O’Hagan, who appears as Stephanie, added that she’d gotten used to parts of her costume as well: namely, her fake baby bump. O’Hagan admitted that she “missed the bump” when she “became not pregnant” and had to take off the costume. She also agreed that the Vault suits are “so comfortable” and complimented costume designer Amy Wescott and her team, saying that they’d “outdone themselves” with the suits.

The Fallout series will star Ella Purnell, Aaron Moten, Walter Goggins, Rodrigo Luzzi, and Annabel O’Hagan, among other names. You can catch all eight episodes of the new series tonight on Prime Video.
