‘Fairytale’ Scottish destination most likely to see white Christmas named among best real-life winter wonderlands

DESPITE the first snowfall of winter just a few weeks ago, forecasters believe the chances of a white Christmas are slim for most parts of Scotland.

The Met Office said the climatic ingredients needed for a snow-covered December 25 are missing for most of the country this year.

But some destinations across the globe will almost guarantee you a white Christmas.

And one area of Scotland that’s most likely to see snow over the festive period has been named as one of the most enchanting winter destinations to visit in Europe.

Travel experts at StressFreeCarRental.com ranked a small village in the Highlands among the top six real-life winter wonderlands.

Tomintoul is the highest village in the Highlands at 1,164ft and is nestled on the northern slopes of the Cairngorm Mountains.

The village is a popular destination for snow activities including skiing and snowboarding.

And it has over one hundred miles of walking and biking trails.

The village snows on average 61 days a year meaning locals regularly enjoy a snowy Christmas day.

Tomintoul and its snow fortune shot to fame in 1999 after BBC legend Sir Terry Wogan criticised the council for never being prepared for snow on the A39 Cockbridge to Tomintoul road on his radio show.

Also making the list is the Arctic Circle village of Inari in Finland with snow snow-capped forests, husky safaris and the chance to see the green Northern Lights.

Hallstatt in Austria is perfect for a chalet stay with icy lakes and surrounded by big snow-covered mountains in the Alps.

And in neighbouring Germany, Mittenwald boasts alpine charm and a seasonal atmosphere.

Their ski resort is perfect for keen skiers to enjoy the mountain ranges.

Cortina d’Ampezzo in Italy is perched in the Dolomites mountains and is renowned for its landscape, heritage and outdoor sporting activities.

And the final spot is Karpacz in Poland.

The winter town is a perfect alternative to the busy Alps and is characterised by its charm with visitors being attracted to the mountain views.

John Charnock, CEO of StressFreeCarRental.com said: “It is a dream for many to experience a white Christmas, and there are some locations even more beautiful once winter arrives and festivities begin.

“With our favourite Christmas movies and children’s festive tales set in snowy scenes, most hope to spend the big day in a snow-blanketed location.

“Unfortunately snowfall is never guaranteed on the big day, as temperatures and humidity must be at the perfect levels for it to set on the ground.

“Luckily, those planning to whisk off and enjoy the festivities are in luck because we have rounded up the best spots to enjoy a white Christmas.”
