Maharashtra Portfolios: Devendra Fadnavis has kept the Home Ministry, while his deputies, Ajit Pawar and Eknath Shinde, have been assigned the Finance and Urban Development, respectively.
The BJP-led Mahayuti government in Maharashtra announced the much-awaited portfolio allocation on Saturday with Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis keeping Home Ministry. NCP leader Ajit Pawar will look after the Finance and Planning Departments in the state Cabinet.
As many as 39 ministers took oath on December 15 as the highly-anticipated cabinet expansion of the new BJP-led Maharashtra government finally took place after over a week of negotiations. While 33 legislators were sworn in as cabinet ministers, six took oath as ministers of state.
After tense negotiations, the final list saw BJP’s Devendra Fadnavis retaining the Home Ministry, apart from taking the portfolios of Energy (excluding Renewable Energy), Law and Judiciary, General Administration, Information and Publicity (and departments not allotted to any other minister.
Shiv Sena leader and deputy CM Eknath Shinde got the portfolios of Urban Development, Housing, and Public Works (Public Enterprises).
NCP leader and deputy CM Ajit Pawar got the important Finance and Planning Ministry, along with State Excise. Maharastra BJP President Chandrashekhar Bawankule became the state revenue minister, as per the latest allocation.
BJP’s Radhakrishna Vikhe-Patil was assigned the portfolio of Water Resources (Godavari and Krishna Valley Development Corporation, while NCP’s Hasan Mushrif got the Medical Education Ministry.
BJP’s Chandrakant Patil was assigned the Higher and Technical Education Ministry as well as Parliamentary Affairs, while Girish Mahajan was assigned the responsibility of Water Resources (Vidarbha, Tapi, Konkan Development Corporation) as well as Disaster Management.
Earlier in the day, Fadnavis told reporters that the portfolio allocation of his ministry would take place either later in the day, or on Sunday. “Portfolio distribution can take place by tonight or tomorrow morning,” Fadnavis said.

Meanwhile, the winter session of the Maharashtra legislative assembly concluded in Nagpur on Saturday. Opposition parties from the Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) alleged that the session was held only for formality as ministers couldn’t resolve issues of farmers and others in the absence of portfolios.
The six-day winter session witnessed uproar over Union Home Minister Amit Shah’s remarks on B R Ambedkar, violence in Parbhani city in central Maharashtra over the desecration of a replica of the Constitution, and the murder of a sarpanch in Beed.
