Over a week ago, South Korean actors Park Seo Joon and Han So Hee united for a period monster K-drama titled Gyeongseong Creature. Helmed by Chung Dong Hoon, the part arrived on December 22 followed by part 2 on January 5, 2024. It is also one of the rare Korean dramas, on Netflix, that received two-season order, initially.
EXCLUSIVE: Gyeongseong Creature star Park Seo Joon on balancing weighty roles and emotional well-being: “It almost feels like walking on a tightrope”
Set in the spring of 1945, Ongseong Hospital in Gyeongseong (now known as Seoul in South Korea) unveils its dark secrets, casting a spell of suspense over a gripping series. Entrepreneur Jang Tae Sang and the astute sleuth Yoon Chae Ok emerge as reluctant allies, navigating the treacherous waters of survival. Against the backdrop of a city, their destinies intertwine as they confront a creature spawned from the depths of human avarice. As shadows of wartime desperation loom large, courage collides with the eerie manifestations of greed, creating an atmospheric narrative that transcends time and leaves audiences on the edge of anticipation. Jang Tae Sang and Yoon Chae Ok, witnessing the Japanese military’s atrocities, unite to rescue captives. Amidst the horrors, they encounter a mysterious creature, evoking a shared fear. Their quest for freedom intertwines with Wi Ha Joon’s Kwon Joon Taek, a wealthy heir and activist ensnared after a valiant but futile effort to liberate Korea.
Ahead of the premiere last week, in a roundtable conversation which Bollywood Hungama was a part of, Park Seo Joon, Han So Hee, and director Chung Dong Yoon delved into their drama, shared insights on its nuances and the thrilling elements that await viewers. Park has had an intriguing year with a sports drama movie Dream, a realistic acclaimed story Concrete Utopia, a Hollywood debut with The Marvels and now Gyeongseong Creature.
Bollywood Hungama reporter asked Park about his approach towards immersing himself in a character emotionally, and how he finds a balance between staying true to the character and maintaining his own emotional well-being. To which, he responded, “It is a very difficult question. I think when it comes to approaching a character, it works the same way with all of my projects and characters. I believe, it is the role of the actor to fill in what is not explained about the character in the script. I try to think of the backstory and history of the character where it is not written in the script.”
Adding to that, Park said, “As of the emotional aspects of the character, it obviously does affect your personal life to some extent. But I always try to think of the character only when I am on set. Once the day of shooting is over, I try to stop thinking about it. That is my way to distance myself from the character.” He said that he tries to find a balance and not get too immersed in the process, however, it almost feels like walking on a tightrope.
