Anil George is on a roll. Last week, he impressed the audience with his role of Bani in the Pan-India hit Kalki 2898 AD. This week, he’ll be seen in the much-awaited web series, Mirzapur’s third season. Mirzapur’s memes are famous and one of the meme dialogues ‘Bade harami ho beta’ is uttered by Anil. The talented actor spoke about this aspect and a lot more in an exclusive interview with Bollywood Hungama.
EXCLUSIVE: Anil George reacts to his iconic Mirzapur meme: “I have seen girls look at me and say ‘Dekho ‘bahut harami ho beta’ wale actor ja rahe hai’”
When asked if he’s excited for Mirzapur, Anil George made an honest confession, “I don’t get too excited about anything. Of course, I am happy for Mirzapur as also for Kalki 2898 AD. But I don’t show. It’s inside me (smiles).”
We had to talk about his iconic dialogue at the very start. Did he ever imagine the ‘Bade harami ho beta’ dialogue would become viral? He replied, “Never! And these were all improvised scenes. I have the habit of improvising and my directors also allow me to do so.”
Has he ever been stopped on the street and have people asked him to mouth this legendary one-liner? Anil George laughed as he narrated, “Don’t ask me. I have seen girls look at me and say ‘Dekho ‘bahut harami ho beta’ wale actor ja rahe hai’! Some people would stare at me. Then they’d come closer and ask, ‘Aap ‘Bahut harami ho beta’ waale hi ho na?’! Some of them would even ask me to say the dialogue. I fulfil their wish but also wonder, ‘Do they even know what it means?’!”
Anil George has worked in several films and shows and he’s memorable not just for his acting talent but also his trademark beard. There have also been times when he’s been stereotyped because of his beard and given the role of a terrorist or antagonist.
Anil George admits that he has been stereotyped and adds, “A lot of people would advise me that I should cut off my beard. But I would tell them, ‘Lekin iski wajah se mujhe kaam bhi mil raha hai’. Also, my close ones love my bearded look. In between, when I shaved my beard, they didn’t like it. My brother-in-law remarked, ‘Yeh new look bhi theek hai lekin daadhi waale look ki baat hi alag hai’.”
In Kalki 2898 AD, he was seen in a clean-shaven look. On this, he said, “I was waiting for a good role that would compel me to shave off my beard. My wish got manifested and how. I got a coveted role that too in a film starring some of the biggest names of Indian cinema.”
This writer reminded him that he was seen in Miss Lovely (2014), co-starring Nawazuddin Siddiqui, in a clean-shaven avatar as well. Anil smiled as he was reminded of the acclaimed flick saying, “Our film went to Cannes and the international media wrote extensively about me and my performance. Some even said that ‘Nawazuddin se upar hai mera kaam’.”
Anil George’s stint at the Cannes red carpet is also worth remembering as again, he appeared there without his beard. Anil George, at this point, revealed, “When I reached Cannes, I had my beard. I even attended a dinner where I wore a black sherwani, gifted to me by Tom Alter, whom I considered my elder brother. I had my long flowing hair and beard. 2-3 girls saw me and woh aisa fida ho gayi mujh pe ki main bata nahin sakta! My co-star Niharika Singh told me, ‘Inko aap hotel hi le jaao’!”
He continued, “But then our director Ashim Ahluwalia told me, ‘If you don’t mind, it’ll be great if you shave off your beard since you appear clean-shaven in the film. People might not recognize you’. Nawazuddin and Niharika also suggested that I should cut off my beard. I reluctantly did so.”
