Ganguly had staged night-long dharna on Wednesday in the premises of Bansdroni Police Station demanding arrest of the excavator driver and the release of a BJP leader, who was arrested in connection with Bansdroni accident case. Though Ganguly was arrested, the driver of the excavator is yet to be arrested.
Vehement protests erupted in south Kolkata’s Bansdroni over the death of a school student in a road accident on October 2 morning. A Class-IX student was crushed by the excavator while standing near his tuition centre. The incident sparked protests and outrage of the locals, who were aggrieved due to poor condition of the road, that reportedly led to the accident.
Actor turned BJP leader Roopa Ganguly staged protests on the issue outside the Bansdroni police station from Wednesday evening, demanding the immediate arrest of the driver responsible for the student’s death. She alleged that the Trinamool Congress for shielding the goons.
The protests by BJP intensified, leading to the arrest of BJP leader Ruby Mondal and four others. After nearly 14 hours of protests, Ganguly was also arrested for obstructing police to perform their work.
Amid public outrage, the protest continued throughout the night and the locals even clashed with the police and demanded the presence of the MLA and councillor, holding them responsible for the incident.
Enraged after the accident, which allegedly occurred due to the poor condition of the road, locals vandalised the excavator and held the police and Councillor responsible for the incident.
The Trinamool Congress councillor also faced the ire of the protesters as he was accused of negligence. The locals blocked the road and the Officer-in-Charge (OC) of the Patuli police station was gheraoed for several hours. The OC was even shoved into the muddy water on the road by angry protesters.
Following the death of the student yesterday, the repairing of the roads have started.
