Visiting an affordable European getaway seems to be to be more difficult than ever but this beautiful Spanishcity could be the answer for Brits looking for some winter sun. 

Not so long ago, when exchange rates were more favourable and certain parts of Europe remained largely undiscovered by tourists, a holiday abroad could be quite affordable.

Coffee, food and even hotels seemed remarkably cheap compared to costs in England. 

But now reasonably priced accommodation and restaurants that haven’t inflated their prices for tourists are becoming rare, they haven’t vanished entirely.

However, this one Spanish could be the perfect budget-friendly holiday destination in 2024, according to Telegraph Travel who reviewed average prices for essentials like taxi fares, meals out, coffees, and beers. 

Zaragoza, Spain’s fifth largest city, is located in the north-east of the country and despite its size, remains largely undiscovered by tourists. 

It’s a captiva.ting city filled with Roman ruins, Islamic architecture, and charming tapas bars is also surprisingly affordable, with a meal for one averaging around £12.55. 

But before diving into zthe local cuisine, visitors can immerse themselves in Zaragoza’s cultural offerings, which are alos reasonably priced.

The Zaragoza Museum, showcasing works by Francisco de Goya and other Spanish artists, is free to enter, while the dedicated Goya gallery costs €8 (approximately £6.70). 

Beyond art, the city is brimming with magnificent churches and cathedrals, including the iconic El Pilar, a popular stop for pilgrims.

Zaragoza is very walkable, so you may not need to spend much on transport. But if you do decide to take a taxi, fares are inexpensive, averaging around 72p per kilometre—so getting around won’t make a dent in your budget.

You can get there relatively easily and cheaply from the UK, depending on the day and time you travel, and with which airline. 

Direct Ryanair flights from Stansted to Zaragoza start at £40 return. As for accommodation, options include Innside Zaragoza, where double rooms start at £79.
