European Citizen’s Prize 2023 Award Ceremony | News

Awarded every year by the European Parliament, the prize goes to projects organised by people or organisations that foster mutual understanding between people in the EU, cross-border cooperation that builds a stronger European spirit and EU values and fundamental rights.

WHEN: Tuesday 7 November at 17.00 CET

WHERE: Parliament’s Hemicycle in Brussels, SPAAK building, and via webstreaming here.

The ceremony will be opened by Vice-President Dita Charanzová (Renew, CZ), Chancellor of the European Citizen’s Prize.

Vice-President Charanzová said: “The European project would not be a success without the absolute commitment, the immense contribution and the extraordinary passion of our citizens. This award recognises their work and their efforts for a better future. They are a great source of inspiration to all of us.”

There will be speeches by two winners: Czech winner Martina Opava, founder and chair of the La Vida Loca Endowment Fund, for the Life in a Suitcase Project, where maternity nurses make suitcases for abandoned children to preserve memories from the beginning of their lives, such as their birth bracelet or their first comforter.

The second speaker is Andres Lember from Estonia, co-founder and board member from Propastop, a blog to help Estonian and EU citizens to safely navigate the complicated information space, to develop citizens’ skills to think critically, and to recognise misinformation and hostile propaganda.

Background

Each year, the European Parliament awards The European Citizen’s Prize to citizens, groups, associations and organisations for projects on better understanding and closer integration between citizens, cross-border cultural cooperation and the values enshrined in the EU Charter of Fundamental Rights.
