Etiquette coach shares when your elbows can go on the table

If you grew up hearing ‘elbows off the table’ – you’re not alone.

For years, our parents would scold us for so much as thinking as committing such a heinous act. It was on par with talking with our mouth full, slurping our drinks, and getting our phone out when company was present.

But is a sneaky elbow against the table really the epitome of bad manners and loutish behaviour? Well, according to one expert – it’s not a black and white issue.

William Hanson is the UK’s leading etiquette coach, and co-host of the acclaimed podcast, Help I Sexted My Boss. In a recent TikTok video, the King of all things couth described the act as ‘very inelgant’ and ‘really impractical’.

However, he also said there is one particular exception to the rule – allowing you to finally defy your parents without any repercussions.

“At the end of a meal, when there is no food on the table, it is perhaps permissible to get away with the odd elbow best,” he said. “Particularly if other guests are doing it. But if in doubt, don’t.”

Hundreds of viewers flocked to the comments to express their thoughts, with many agreeing the inpolite gesture would have gotten them in trouble as a child.

“My grandmother always said if food is on the table elbows are off,” wrote one user. Another agreed, commenting: “My grandma used to poke our elbow with a fork if they were on the table while there was food.”

A third wrote: “I really try to be mindful with this. Most times (subconsciously) I find my elbows already on the table… I’ll put in more effort. Thanks, William.”

Even those from across the pond agreed that elbows on tables are a big no-no. “As someone who grew up in Texas this was a big thing with my family we never had our elbows on the table,” one person explained. “I’m not sure if it’s the same with other Texans but that’s how my family was.”

Another joked: “Luckily, I’m small enough to get away with it.”
