‘Entire Nehru-Gandhi family against OBCs…’: BJP counters Rahul Gandhi over remarks on PM Modi’s caste | India News

NEW DELHI: In response to Congress leader Rahul Gandhi‘s recent statement questioning Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s OBC (Other Backward Caste) status, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) clarified on Thursday that PM Modi‘s caste had been officially recognized as OBC in 1999, two years prior to his first term as chief minister of Gujarat.
Bharatiya Janata Party IT cell head, Amit Malviya, took to the social media platform X to counter Rahul Gandhi’s claim. He said, “Prime Minister Narendra Modi got his caste notified as an OBC on Oct 27, 1999, a full 2 years BEFORE he became the Chief Minister of Gujarat.” Malviya labeled Rahul Gandhi’s assertion as a “blatant lie” and attached a gazette notification to support the BJP’s stance.
Rahul Gandhi had earlier remarked that PM Modi does not belong to the OBC community as he was born in a general category. Addressing a public rally in Jharsuguda during the Odisha leg of Bharat Jodo Nyay Yatra, Rahul Gandhi urged people to convey this information to BJP workers.
“Whenever BJP workers come to you, tell them one thing that our Prime Minister lied to the entire country that he belonged to the backward class. He was not born in a backward class, he belongs to the general caste. You tell this to every BJP worker,” the Wayanad MP said.

Rahul Gandhi: ‘PM Modi’s birth caste was in the General category, not OBC’

PM Modi, during a recent parliamentary session, had referred to himself as the “biggest OBC” and accused the Congress of hypocrisy and double standards regarding leaders from backward communities. In his speech, he cited a letter written by Jawaharlal Nehru to state chief ministers, where Nehru expressed opposition to reservations in government jobs.

“Congress party and UPA government did not deliver justice with OBCs. A few days ago, Karpoori Thakur ji was conferred with Bharat Ratna. In 1970, when he became Bihar CM, what was not done to destabilise his government? Congress can’t tolerate OBCs…They keep counting how many OBCs are there in the government. Can’t you (Congress) see the biggest OBC here (pointing towards himself)?” PM Modi said in his reply to the ‘Motion of Thanks’ on the President’s Address in Lok Sabha on Monday.
