English riverside town with one of UK’s prettiest streets is now home to the best pub in the country

A PORT town in the UK best known for its pretty streets is also home to the best gastropub in the country.

Roughly 7 miles northeast of Ipswich lies Woodbridge – a historic market town in Suffolk.

While the Suffolk town is home to several historical locations, including the Sutton Hoo and the oldest working tide mill in the country, it also has The Unruly Pig.

Located near the village of Bromeswell, The Unruly Pig is just a seven-minute drive from Woodbridge.

This year, The Unruly Pig took the top spot in The Estrella Damm Top 50 Gastropubs bumper list – making it the best in the country.

It’s not the first time the gastropub has made the list either, it also nabbed the top spot in 2021.

The boozer serves a cross between British and Italian cuisine, giving diners a “refreshing change from the usual pub fare”.

Menus change at least monthly and more than 60 wines are available by the glass as well as hand-pulled beers.

Estrella Damm and publisher Chris Lowe release the bumper list annually to celebrate “excellence” in pub food across the country.

Ed Bedington, editor of the Morning Advertiser, said: “Pubs serve so many roles to so many people, and for operators like the Unruly Pig and all of our list, to be able to offer amazing food and wonderful experiences, up there with some of the best in fine dining, is brilliant to see.”

The watering hole has received praise from visitors in recent years.

One person wrote: “Absolutely stunning meal from start to finish. The room is lovely with ideal lighting and temperature.”

Another person added: “If you are ever within 1 hour of this place I would urge you to book and visit. The food, service, and ambiance are fabulous.”

Away from the pub, there are other attractions worth visiting in the historic town, including its picturesque streets.

The Thoroughfare, the main shopping street in Woodbridge, has previously been nominated for a national award for the best high street in the UK.

Running through the heart of Woodbridge’s town centre, the Thoroughfare is home to a range of independent shops as well as popular high street chains.

Other attractions in Woodbridge include the Sutton Hoo, a 255-acre estate, which is home to one of the greatest archaeological discoveries of all time.

The priceless pieces of Anglo-Saxon treasure were first discovered in the late 1930s by archaeologist Basil Brown after Edith Pretty, a landowner at Sutton Hoo, asked Basil to investigate the burial mounds on her property.

Now, a National Trust site, Sutton Hoo attracts thousands of visitors every year.

Visitors to the Sutton Hoo can walk around the Royal Burial Ground, climb a 17-metre viewing tower, and learn more about the archaeological work that took place.

Original artefacts are on display at the High Hall exhibition, while other pieces are on display in the British Museum.

Entry tickets to the Sutton Hoo cost £15 for a full-paying adult, and £7.50 for a child.

Other attractions in the town include a working tide mill, which is only one of two in the UK.

Woodbridge is a 25-minute drive from Ipswich, and it’s a 90-minute drive from Cambridge.
