England’s ‘most beautiful’ seaside town is also the UK’s top staycation spot for 2024 | Travel News | Travel

Now that the weather is slowly getting sunnier many people will be planning out their holidays, but you do not need to travel far in the UK to find somewhere interesting to visit.

Saltburn-by-the-Sea, commonly referred to as Saltburn, is a quiet seaside town in North Yorkshire, England which recently made headlines due to the popular psychological thriller film of the same name which came out last year.

However, Saltburn is worth visiting at least as the town is perched on cliffs above its golden sandy beach and overlooks the North Sea, making it a picturesque spot perfect for photographs or taking a leisurely stroll.

The town is known for its Victorian charm and its unique way of getting to the beach, as the Saltburn Cliff List was first built in 1884 and consists of two water-powdered carriages which run and down the cliffs between the town and the beach.

Not only is it a historical landmark of the town as it is the oldest water-powered funicular railway in the world, but it offers passengers breathtaking views of the surrounding area without having to spend ages walking down the rugged cliffside.

Another incredible landmark of Saltburn is its pier, which was built in 1869 and has been subject to many improvements over the years it is now one of the best places to grab some fish and chips or ice cream as you take in the beautiful scenery.

No beach holiday is complete without trying the local fish and chips, and the Seaview Restaurant near the beach is believed to have the tastiest in town. The restaurant also works with local boats which partake in the Responsible Fishing Scheme to ensure their food is helping preserve the marine wildlife.

The Saltburn Pier is also a popular spot to see dolphins and seals or even see basking sharks if you are lucky.

Once you arrive at Saltburn there is plenty to explore, and one of its most unique locations is the Saltburn Miniature Railway which runs from the beach along a woodland valley way and is the perfect way to take in the town’s natural beauty and sights.

The Valley Gardens is one of the best places for a picnic or some leisure time as it is an incredible park filled with colourful flowers and ornamental ponds and a beautiful place for a nature walk.

It is also the best spot for a tasty treat, as the Valley Garden Victorian Tearooms offer a wide selection of homemade cakes to enjoy as well as ice cream during the warmer months.

There is also the local farmer’s market open every second Saturday where you can buy some local crafts, artwork or some tasty local food.

However, it is best to plan out your visit to Saltburn ahead of time as the town is known for its fun festivals throughout the year such as its Food Festival, Arts Festival, Folk and music festivals and there is even a Surf Festival and Beer Festival.

One of the town’s most unique events is the Saltburn Victorian weekend, where people dress up and there are performances in the streets, horse-drawn carriage rides, vintage markets and other historic activities to enjoy.

Saltburn has also been named the top seaside town to visit in 2024 by The Sun which recommended it due to it being less crowded than surrounding coastal towns.

It has also been voted one of the most beautiful spots in the UK to visit this year and has been named the “best town for a seaside staycation in 2024” by Simply Seaviews.

So no matter when you visit Saltburn there is plenty to do and see in this historic town which makes it the perfect place for a seaside holiday.
