Emilia Pérez creates history with 13 Oscar nominations, breaks records for Non-English Language Film

The 2025 Oscar nominations are here and Payal Kapadia’s All We Imagine as Light and Sandhya Suri’s Santosh did not bag a nomination for India. But, Priyanka Chopra and Guneet Monga-produced live-action short, Anuja, secured its spot in the list. Well, this unpredicted list has raised a lot of eyebrows and how! The Oscars 2025 nominations event got postponed due to the Los Angeles wildfires. Reportedly with new host Conan O’Brien, the Oscars ceremony will take place on March 2. The Netflix narco-musical about trans identity Emilia Pérez has been in the Oscar nominations. Also, Jacques Audiard’s Emilia Pérez, a Spanish language, French-made film has been ruling the Oscars nominations chart with a leading 13 nominations whcih includes best picture and best actress for Karla Sofía Gascón. This nomination has made her the first openly trans actor ever nominated for an Oscar. The film has been nominated for directing, original screenplay, two of its songs and for Zoe Saldaña. Emilia Pérez has been nominated for non-English language film ever. The film now joins the ranks of All About Eve (1950), Titanic (1997) and La La Land (2016) which received 14 nominations. Wicked, another musicasl Broadway adaptation has been nominated. Jon M. Chu’s lavish Wizard of Oz riff scored 10 nominations which includes best picture and acting nods for its stars Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande. The Brutalist, Brady Corbet’s postwar epic film has also received 10 nominations, including best picture, best director and nominations for actor Adrien Brody, Guy Pearce and Felicity Jones. Well, the nominees for best picture are Anora; The Brutalist; A Complete Unknown; Conclave; Dune: Part Two; Emilia Pérez; I’m Still Here, Nickel Boys; The Substance; Wicked.

The six most honored films are Emilia Pérez, Wicked, The Brutalist, Anora (six nominations) Conclave (eight nominations) and A Complete Unknown (eight nominations). Brazilian film I’m Still Here landed Fernanda Torres a Best Actress nomination.
