Embarrassing moment DNC roll call descends into chaos as Alabama fails to cast vote and Lil Jon takes over for Georgia

RAPPER Lil Jon stole the show on Tuesday night as the Democratic National Convention battled through technical difficulties to confirm Kamala Harris as the party’s nominee.

The chaotic roll call got off to an embarrassing start with Alabama delegates smiling and clapping but failing to cast their votes when called on.

While they eventually managed to announce Harris as their pick as Sweet Home Alabama filled the convention center, the mishap was quickly forgotten when Lil Jon emerged from the crowd to break out into one of his classic hits.

Lil Jon chanted, “We’re not going back,” with the crowd as he stood next to the Georgia delegation.

Earlier in the roll call, the delegates in Arkansas began speaking too early and had to repeat themselves to properly cast their votes.

Each state was given its own song during the roll call, chosen by DJ Cassidy who has a history with the DNC.

Cassidy was in charge of the musical backing during the 2012 DNC for Barack Obama‘s re-election and was the music coordinator for Obama’s 2009 inaugural balls.

New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy spoke on behalf of the state to cast 142 delegates for Harris as Born in the USA by Bruce Springsteen played in the background.

“I’m from New Jersey, and you’re not!” Murphy shouted as he cast his vote.

Other celebrities present during the roll call were director Spike Lee with New York and actor Sean Astin appearing with the Indiana delegation.

“I want what’s best for Indiana and that means electing Kamala Harris, the first woman president of the United States,” said Astin.

In what may have been a jab at Ron DeSantis, the Florida delegation used the song I Won’t Back Down by Tom Petty while casting their vote for Harris.

The song was used heavily by DeSantis in his failed bid for the White House, however, it was also used by the chair of the state’s Democratic Party Nikki Fried, who led the roll call for Florida.

California and Minnesota – the homes of Harris and Tim Walz respectively – initially passed when it was their turn during the alphabetical order.

Minnesota would get its chance again to cast its vote for Harris as Hans Storvick, a former student of Walz, introduced the votes.

“He’s always been there for us, and that’s how I know he’ll always be there for you as vice president,” said Storvick.

California was the final state to cast its vote, with Governor Gavin Newsom leading the delegation.

“My name’s Governor Gavin Newsom from the great state of Nancy Pelosi,” said Newsom as Pelosi stood beside him.

“We believe a future happens in California first and Democrats, I’ve had the privilege of over 20 years to see that future taking shape with a star in Alameda courtroom by the name of Kamala Harris.”

Kendrick Lamar’s smash hit, Not Like Us, played as Gavin Newsom cast the vote.

“It’s time for us to do the right thing and that is to elect Kamala Harris as the next president of the United States of America.”

DNC night 1 highlights…

  • Vice President Kamala Harris surprised Democratic delegates in Chicago‘s United Center by delivering a short and sweet statement praising President Joe Biden.
  •  Harris did her best Barack Obama impression by sporting a tan suit.
  •  Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez lashed out at Donald Trump during her speech, saying he’s not an ally of the working class.
  •  Former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton called Harris and Walz’s campaign “the future.”
  •  Joe Biden took a bow and delivered an emphatic, nearly hour-long speech highlighting his administration’s achievements, and made the case that Harris was the best person to lead the country.
  •  “She’s tough. She’s experienced. And she has enormous integrity,” Biden told a lively crowd.

Meanwhile, as the party continues inside the United Center, hundreds of pro-Palestinian protesters gathered in front of the Israeli Consulate.

Several people were arrested as the crowd clashed with police officers.

The Chicago Police Department prepared ahead of the convention after similar protests sprung the night before.

A total of 13 people were arrested during day one of the convention after a group of protesters breached the outer security perimeter fence outside the arena.

Behind Enemy Lines, a pro-Palestine group began protesting outside the consulate around 7:00 pm, calling for members to “Shut down the DNC for Gaza.”

As a result of the protest, train stations near the consulate were shut down.

MEDICAL EMERGENCY

Harris and Walz tuned into the DNC from their rally in Milwaukee, Wisconsin.

“Hello to everyone joining us from exciting Chicago,” said Harris.

“The delegates at the Democratic National Convention – well, they just completed their roll call and they have nominated Coach Walz and me to be the next Vice President and President of the United States of America.

“And I thank everyone there and here for believing in what we can do together.

“We are so honored to be your nominees.

However, the event had to be paused after someone in the crowd appeared to suffer a medical emergency.

Harris was speaking to the audience about fighting for the ideals of the country when she suddenly stopped and called attention to the crowd.

“We need medical assistance here,” said Harris.

“We need a nurse. We need a medic here please.”

Harris pointed to the crowd, urging people to make way for first responders.

After a few moments, Harris assured the audience, “We’re going to be okay.”

“This is who we are, right? This is what we’re about – looking out for each other.”

‘THANK YOU, JOE’

President Biden, who was supposed to be the center of the DNC’s festivities, delivered a forceful, hour-long speech that diverted well beyond the scheduled primetime slot during night one.

A spirited crowd waving preprinted “We ❤️ Joe” signs heaped Biden with admiration as a final testament to his 50 years in public service.

In his nearly hour-long speech, an emotional Biden highlighted his administration’s achievements and made the case for his successor, 59, to represent the nation.

“I love my country more, and we need to preserve our democracy.

“America, America, I gave my best to you. I made a lot of mistakes in my career.

“Well, I gave my best to you for 50 years. Like many of you, I’ve given my heart and soul to our nation, and I’ve been blessed a million times in return with the support of the American people.”

Biden passed the torch to Harris’ hands, whom he referred to as “vice president soon-to-be president Kamala Harris.

The president called nominating Harris as his vice president the “best decision I made my whole career.”

“She’s tough, she’s experienced, and she has enormous integrity,” Biden said of his vice president.

“Her story represents the best American story. She’ll be president our children can look up to.
