RESIDENTS in Glasgow have been left scared to leave their homes after an elderly dog was mauled by an ‘XL Bully’.
Marion Thomson’s 13-year-old pooch Scamp was attacked by an out-of-control and unmuzzled beast at around 1.15am on Sunday, May 5.
Her husband Barry was walking their dog at the time.
They were heading towards some fields on Mossvale Way when the suspected bully pounced on the elderly dog and pinned him to the ground by the neck, Glasgow Live reported.
Barry had to jump on top of both dogs in a desperate attempt to help his beloved pet.
The poorly pooch was rushed to the vets but the wounds on his shoulder couldn’t be closed because they had become infected.
Marion now fears he might not survive.
She told Glasgow Live: “It appeared out of nowhere and pinned Scamp to the ground by the neck.
“My husband had to lie across it because he thought it was going to kill him. The attack lasted around five minutes before they could be broken apart.
“They can’t stitch him because his shoulder is badly infected, it has to come out first, and the swelling goes down before they can even think of that. We’re worried it’s going to finish him off, he’s 13.

“Even outside of his injuries, it’s going to take a long time for him to build up the confidence he once had. He’s scared to approach us which isn’t like him, he’s usually a daddy’s boy. He’s also not eaten since Sunday.”
Marion claims that locals in the Craigend area of the city are scared to leave their homes after two other incidents involving XL Bullies attacking other dogs.
She added: “We’ve got a two-year-old granddaughter that comes to visit.
“What would happen if it went for her? What would have happened if it had turned on my husband?
“The dog is a danger. Every dog owner here is terrified to take their dog out because of what’s going on.”
A Police Scotland spokesperson told Glasgow Live: “Around 1.15am on Sunday, 5 May, 2024, officers received a report of a dog having attacked another dog on Mossvale Way, Glasgow. Enquiries are ongoing.”
In February new laws were put in place to deal with XL-bully type dogs.
Scots owners could be slapped with a £5,000 fine or even JAIL if they don’t comply with the strict rules of owning the breed.
From the end of February, it is now illegal to sell, breed, abandon or give away an XL Bully in Scotland.
Any XL Bully type dog must be kept on a lead and muzzled in public.
A ban was imposed in England and Wales at the start of this year after the fatal maulings.
Scotland saw an influx of owners and breeders bringing their XL Bullies north of the border to escape the ban down south.
Since the law came into place in England, two XLs have had to be shot dead by armed cops in separate attacks in East Kilbride and Hamilton.
