NEW DELHI: Egyptian foreign minister Badr Abdelatty cancelled his visit to India hours before his scheduled arrival on Thursday morning. The visit had already been announced by Union ministry of external affairs.
The minister though spoke to his counterpart S Jaishankar on phone, emphasising the Egyptian leadership’s commitment to strengthening ties with India. He also reviewed cooperation in key areas that have witnessed strong growth like pharmaceuticals, IT and renewables.
While there was no reason given by either side for the cancellation of the visit, it’s learnt that the decision might have something to do with President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi’s engagements. Reports from Egypt said Sisi might visit the US next week for a bilateral with President Donald Trump. In a phone call earlier this week, Trump had discussed with him Egypt’s important role in the release of hostages from Gaza. TNN
