‘I Wish we Were Closer’: Akshay Oberoi on His Bond With Cousin Vivek Oberoi
When asked Akshay, if Vivek was an inspiration for him to become an actor while growing up, he said, “You can’t deny that Vivek hai, tauji (Suresh Oberoi) hai actors , that subconsciously I thought that there was a possibility in the realm of possibilities. However, I didn’t grow up around him. I was raised in America, and unfortunately, the family didn’t get along-Punjabi ego bhi ajata hai beech main. So, I don’t really know him and didn’t grow up with my uncle. I actually see myself as an outsider because I didn’t receive any help from them. I truly respect them as actors, I’m proud of their work, and I admire their acting.”
Akshay further added, “I wish we were closer. There is some sort of thing that we wish could have done together. But that didn’t happen, that was my own destiny. Boht log, mere saath joke karte hai ki mera reverse nepotism hua hai. So, my journey became that much very similar to an outsider, because, main jis tarah se line main lakar audition karta tha, aj bhi jo struggle karta hun, it is a normal outsider struggle.”

People who know my journey, they would know, because saaf dikhata hai kon kis family se launch hua hai, jab aap family ke zariye launch hote ho, sabko pta chal jata ki aapka khandan apko push kar raha hai. Jo sachayi hai vo hai. Agar unhone di hoti salaah mujhe toh main khushi-khushi leleta. Toh mujhe mila nhi toh main kya kar sakta hun.” (“There’s no connection or point of contact, so where would I get advice from him? People who are familiar with my journey would understand because it’s clear who got launched through their family. When you’re launched through family, it’s obvious that your family is helping you. It doesn’t seem that way with me, and that’s the truth. If he had give me advice, I would have gladly accepted it. Since I didn’t receive any, there’s nothing I can do about it.”)
