The egg experts said: “Eggshells have tiny pores which bacteria from other foods and smells, such as food odour and flavouring, can seep through over time.”

Therefore, in order to keep your eggs tasting as fresh as possible, the best place to store them is in the carton they came in.

“Not only does the box protect the eggs, but it also shows the best before date which you can refer back to anytime you’re unsure,” the experts added.

“You may have a lovely looking spiral egg holder or handy egg shelf in your fridge but the truth is nothing can beat the original carton.”

Where to store the egg carton

Some may argue that the best position to store eggs is on the kitchen counter, but the egg experts would disagree.

Eggs prefer a relatively stable temperature below 20C, which means storing the egg carton on the counter could lead to invariable heat differences.

Every time you’re cooking in the kitchen, the area is getting warmer, which impacts the eggs.

This is why the safest bet is to store the eggs inside of the fridge, inside its original carton.

However, before using them, it’s advised to let them sit outside of the fridge for about half hour before use.

The egg water test

While the carton inside of the fridge may be the best way to store eggs, especially as you can see the best-before date, sometimes you just want to store them in a way that looks pretty on the kitchen counter or elsewhere.

In this case, it’s best to test the eggs before using them to make sure they’ve not gone off.

Experts at Nellie’s Free Range revealed the “best way” to tell if the egg is still edible is by place it in a bowl or glass filled with cold water.

If the egg sinks to the bottom and lays on its side, the egg is “very fresh” whereas an egg that stays at the bottom but stands up is “acceptable to eat”.

Should an egg float to the surface, however, then this isn’t fresh and should be discarded.
