Efforts underway to track down man who escaped Kepayan lockup

KOTA KINABALU: A man under remand escaped from the centralised police lockup in Kepayan here on Saturday (Dec 16).

The detainee, identified as Nazri Hassan, 33, was believed to have slipped out while being escorted by lockup staff to the interrogation room at about 12.30pm.

Sabah Deputy Police Commissioner Deputy Comm Datuk Shahurinain Jais said the man had climbed over a grill door before carefully tiptoeing on a window’s edge over a recreation area.

“The detainee then exited the building and climbed over a fence outside,” he said, when contacted.

“The lockup personnel chased after him but failed to apprehend the suspect who scurried into a bushy area nearby,” he added.

The man was wearing the purple lockup jumpsuit, he said.

DCP Shahurinain said the man was under remand from Dec 10 to 18 for a probe under Section 431A of the Penal Code which is for committing mischief by cutting any electric telegraph cable, wire, line, post, instrument or apparatus for signalling.

He said efforts were underway to track down the escapee, adding the police have launched an operation dubbed “Op Tutup”.

“The public is advised to contact the nearest police station if they had any information on the suspect or his whereabouts,” he said.
