EE customers fuming as mobile network hikes cost of popular plan – are you affected?

EE has hiked the price of its Roam Abroad add-on yet again, leaving customer furious and threatening to switch network carriers.

The add-on allows customers to use their existing data, text and call allowances while in the US, Canada, Mexico, Australia and New Zealand and 47 European destinations at no extra cost.

The mobile operator has increased the price of the plan by 150 per cent within the past 12 months.

Customers began the year paying just £10 per month for their Roam Abroad plan.

But in March 2023 this went up to £15, and it quietly rose to £25 a month in mid-October.

In a statement, EE said: “From 18th October the Roam Abroad Pass increased to £25.

“This will apply to new and existing EE customers. We’re reflecting increasing costs in providing the ability to roam for our customers

“Customers with Smart Plans or inclusive extra’s will continue to benefit from the pass.”

The price hike comes on top of EE’s annual 14.4 per cent increase to contract payments, which it began in April.

Customers are fuming, and contemplating a return to pay-as-you-go contracts or a transition to O2, which has kept EU roaming as a standard feature on their plans.

“It’s like dealing with a polite crime network. I’ll be going back to a pay as you go,” one customer wrote on X (formerly Twitter).

Another tweeted: “The roam abroad pass is going up to £25 in October! I’ll be leaving EE when contract expires!”

“WHAT IS THIS @EE??? £10 price hike with no warning!!! I think it’s time to join the @EU_Commission again,” a third frustrated customer wrote.

“Why are we paying to use our phones on holiday in the 21st century?

“It’s such a scam, it’s unavoidable to pay roaming.”
