A home cook has shared their recipe for air fryer chips – and it adds one extra ‘game changing’ step to make them perfectly crispy.
As a British comfort food staple, chips are a tasty side dish that goes with a wide range of meals.
But while it’s easy enough to just grab a bag of frozen chips from your local supermarket and throw them into the oven, it’s actually not that much harder to make your own batch of fries using an air fryer.
Posting to TikTok, user @NutritionFromKay said: “HEALTHY fries under 150 calories!
“Here’s a simple recipe for all the fry lovers but a much healthier version with less calories using the air fryer.”
In the video, she demonstrated the recipe, taking one unpeeled potato and cutting it into batons.
Russet, Maris Piper or King Edward potatoes are often recommended as the best for making homemade French fries due to their high starch and low moisture content, which allow them to crisp up better.
Once chopped, place the raw fries into a bowl filled with iced water and let them sit for 15 minutes. This helps make the fries nice and crispy.
Next, drain the fries and add one teaspoon of oil along with your choice of seasonings (the video’s creator used salt and paprika) and then place them in the air fryer to cook for 15 to 20 minutes at 200°C/400°F.
You will then have perfectly crisp chips ready to enjoy for less than 150 calories per serving, according to the video’s creator.
The recipe proved to be popular, with many viewers reporting back in the comments section after trying it.
One wrote: “Just made these and omg they are perfect! I’m going to save so much money (and calories) on takeout orders bc I can now make fries at home. Thank you.”
Another said: “The ice bath makes a difference,” to which @NutritionFromKay responded: “Yes definitely a game changer when I started doing the ice bath step lol.”
A third commented: “I keep seeing people put them in ice to make them crispier… I was skeptical and never did it out of doing them in a hurry. Yesterday put them in ice while I went for a run… never going back.”
And a fourth said: “I love these fries!”
